Sawx Sign Goes Up in Flames

The Boston Red Sox's season isn't quite up in flames, but a small fire at a landmark near Fenwaypark cant be a good omen.

The fire Wednesday melted and blackened some of the plastic panels on the red, white and blue Citgo sign over Fenway's Green Monster in left field. No one was injured. Steve MacDonald, a spokesman for the Boston Fire Department, said the flames and smoke, first spotted by bystanders and drivers about noon, were quickly put out and the blaze was likely caused by an electrical short circuit. Damage was estimated at $5,000.

Tony Gonzo Holds Players Only Meeting

Tony Gonzalez held a players-only meeting with his teammates Wednesday to assure them he's not bitter the Kansas City Chiefs failed to trade him to a contender.

The nine-time Pro Bowler admitted, however, he first felt "betrayed" that the Chiefs had not made a deal before the NFL trade deadline Tuesday.

"Initially, yes," he said. "I thought, 'I can't believe this. It's a lie.' But then the more I think about it, the more I calm down.

Kazmir to Start Game 5

The Tampa Bay Rays will start Scott Kazmir in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series instead of James Shields, Rays manager Joe Maddon announced Wednesday.

Shields will be pushed back to Game 6, if needed, Maddon said, because he wants Shields to pitch at home, where he is "very good."

Derrick Harvey Signs w/ Jags

Derrick Harvey, the 8th overall pick in the NFL and the last remaining rookie holdout, has finally agreed to a deal with the Jaguars (says John Clayton). The Jags traded way up to get Harvey at the #8 slot. Too far in OTR’s opinion. That probably had something to do with their difference of opinion as to his worth. His base package will pay him $23.8 million over five years according to Clayton, with guarantees nearing $17.2 million.

MLB Institutes Instant Replay

Starting on Thursday, if a team is starting a new series, instant replay will be used for home run balls.

That’s basically it for that. Read more about it here.

I had a better solution to determine home runs without using instant replay, but Bud Selig didn’t want any part of it. I suggested bigger foul poles. Ones big enough, so there would be no confusion about which side the ball passed on. His argument was it would obstruct the fans’ view of the game. So, I suggested bigger see-through foul poles. He said ‘no.’ So, I slammed a beer in his face. Some would say I won that argument.

Kevin Duckworth Passes Away

Former Portland Trailblazer, San Antonio Spur, Washington Bullet, Milwaukee Buck, and Los Angeles Clipper Kevin Duckworth died on Monday as he was headed to host a free basketball clinic in Oregon.

The cause of death is still to be determined by a medical examiner. He was only 44 years young.

The seven-footer was a two-time NBA allstar and won the NBA Most Improved Player Award during the 1987-88 season.

Brady has Deep Bruise

According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, Tom Brady (the QB of the New England Patriots) has a “deep bone bruise” in his foot. The team initially feared that it was a stress fracture, but a CT scan said otherwise.

“Whether I play, or don’t play, I’d be ready no matter what,” Brady said through an interpreter. “It’s up to coach. I was hoping I could play last week. Coach (Bill Belichick) made a decision not to have me play. We’ll see what the plan is for this week. I’m not sure. I’m hoping I’m always out there. If I don’t play, I’ll be ready for Kansas City.”
